Redesigning a 30-year old platform for Dura Vermeer
From planning to financial accounting, every project at Dura Vermeer begins in Project Master. But after 30 years of organic growth, it was time for a significant change. The system was difficult to maintain, not cloud-based, and it required extensive training to use. In collaboration with Utilus, we developed a future-proof platform by creating a solid foundation that enables employees to perform their daily tasks quickly and efficiently.
Dura Vermeer is one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands. With a turnover of 1.5 billion and more than 3.000 employees, they are one of the leading experts in the design, development and constructions projects.
We got started by talking to domain experts and end users about how they do their work. This way, we quickly got up to speed, enabling us to leverage the existing knowledge to spot potential improvements.
We developed an inspiring 'north star'. This made abstract ideas immediately tangible. As a result we gathered valuable feedback and created excitement among key stakeholders.
We built a modular component library with the key building blocks. This included a style guide, layouts and UX principles. As a result, the product team got a solid foundation to start building.
In close collaboration with the product manager we evaluated all key user flows. By actively involving end users during the entire process, we continuously focused on outcomes, instead of just rebuilding existing features. That’s how we made sure resources were spent on building the right thing, creating value for both the business and the users.
Project Master has undergone significant improvements, starting with a restructuring of its information architecture from menu-driven to project-driven, where the project serves as the central context from selection onwards. This shift has streamlined data input and integrated additional tools for calculations, eliminating the need for separate accounting practices. Smart integrations of various tools ensure seamless collaboration and a frictionless user experience. Moreover, the transition to a web-based, responsive platform enables employees to access Project Master from anywhere, whether at the office or on-site in the construction trailer.
